The Discover Science & Engineering (DSE) programme was developed in response to a key recommendation of the Task Force on the Physical Sciences. This called for a coordinated effort to increase interest in science and encourage young people to consider science as a viable career option.
An Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern, launched DSE as the national integrated awareness programme for coordinated science promotion in October 2003.
DSE brings together many science, technology, engineering and mathematics awareness activities that were previously managed by different bodies, public and private. DSE aims to build and expand on these activities and to deliver a more focused, strategic and quantifiable awareness campaign.
The target audience for DSE includes students at all levels and their parents and teachers, as well as the wider public. DSE also works closely with third-level institutions and with intermediate audiences such as industry and the media.
