The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition is more than a hands-on science competition. For the students who take part, it is an experience of a lifetime.
As well as 500 student projects, the annual event has a further four exhibition halls filled with science and technology based exhibits and entertainment.
The first show was held in Dublin’s Mansion House in 1965. It moved to the much larger venue of the RDS the following year, where it has remained since. The competition was then extended to include schools from Northern Ireland, and the rules evolved to allow teams of up to three students to enter.
For many years the exhibition was sponsored by Aer Lingus and then by Esat, which was taken over by BT in 2000. The event is now organised and sponsored by BT Ireland.
The number of entries reached an all-time high for the January 2009 show, when 1,616 projects were submitted by 3,712 students. All entries are screened to select the 500 final projects. Attendance over the three public days is now over 35,000 people each year, making it one of the largest events of its kind in Europe.
There was also plenty of interest in the Discover Science & Engineering stand at the 2009 show. Our large-scale “Energy House” had three rooms and a garden area highlighting today’s energy issues and engineering solutions. “The science of sport” was the theme of the stand at the 2010 show.
