Nanoquest is a project that uses video gaming to encourage 13- to 15-year-old school students to develop an interest in nanotechnology and science generally.
The medium chosen to captivate and stimulate the “Playstation generation” was a 3D computer game. The game is intended to have fun and challenging gameplay, while introducing nanotechnology concepts through the various challenges.
For example, in level 2 of the game the “Nanogallery” is of particular educational interest. Here the player can learn about nanotechnology and many Junior Science topics in an interesting way.
The game was developed in partnership with CRANN (Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices) at Trinity College Dublin. After a successful pilot in 2006, NanoQuest was updated and extended in 2007.
For Nanoquest, DSE adopted a multi-channel approach to promotion. The game can be played on the website or offline and its availability was promoted using extensive on and offline marketing, including a home page on Bebo for the two main characters.
