Science Week is Ireland’s biggest annual promotion of science to the general public. The week-long programme of events across Ireland each November aims to make science more interesting and accessible to children and adults alike.
The first national Science Week took place in 1996, and since then it has grown to over 500 events a year.
As well as hundreds of science events across the country, attended by over 100,000 people, Science Week 2008 featured:
- A series of lectures by international figures
- Regionally organised event clusters in Sligo, Cork and Galway
- Polls, features and competitions
Science Week Ireland 2009 ran from 8-15 November, and marked the EU Year of Creativity and Innovation. It included science fairs in Limerick, Waterford, Sligo, Galway and Cork, and a free lecture series in the Science Gallery in Dublin for secondary school students, showcasing Irish innovation and career opportunities.
Each year the Science Week website plays an increasingly pivotal role as an information hub. Event organisers submit their event details online to a searchable events database. Organisers and participants can upload images and video of events they have attended.
For the first time in 2008 there was no printed event guide and the Science Week website became the primary source of information about Science Week events.
