Television and video promote science

Discover Science & Engineering (DSE) has made extensive use of broadcast television (with the SCOPE TV series) and is increasingly using other forms of video as well.

For many of its most notable events, DSE commissions video coverage. Examples include Science Week lectures and the Atlantic Conference on Promoting Science Education (October 2008).

We also make use of video in other ways, commissioning broadcast-quality video of science news items, making science-related video available to broadcasters and creating a DSE corporate video.

SCOPE science television

The SCOPE science television series was supported by DSE and broadcast by Irish broadcaster RTÉ. Each show was a 25-minute, fast-moving MTV-style programme targeted at young people.

The 2007 series was the fourth and final series in successive years. The show visited a wide range of locations, from Dublin to Las Vegas, and the series covered topics such as ecological footprints, sleep deprivation, gravity and the science of laughter.

SCOPE’s website has been ambitious, including games, SMS campaigns, quizzes, competitions and online content related to each programme.
